Pope Francis made his last public appearance on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, delivering his Urbi et Orbi message (which translates as "to the city and to the world"). The pope, recovering from pneumonia, sat on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome as Archbishop Diego Ravelli read out loud his prepared words written in Italian. Francis died in the early morning hours of the following day.
